Evan Roberts (1878-1951) was a Welsh revivalist and evangelist who was instrumental in the 1904-1905 Welsh Revival. Born in Wales, Roberts was raised in a religious family and showed an early interest in spirituality and evangelism. In 1904, he was part of a wave of revival that swept across Wales, leading to widespread religious fervor and conversions. Roberts became the face of the revival and traveled the country, preaching and leading revival meetings.
Roberts' revival was characterized by intense emotionalism, including spontaneous outbursts of singing, weeping, and speaking in tongues. Despite his success, Roberts' revival was short-lived, and he soon withdrew from public life due to exhaustion and a decline in his health. Despite this, he remained a respected figure in the Christian community and continued to preach and teach until his death in 1951. Today, Roberts is remembered as a powerful voice of revival and spiritual awakening in the early 20th century, and his revival is considered one of the most significant religious events of the modern era.
